We are grateful for your donations which make possible our work advocating for New York State Senate and Assembly legislators to promote legislation imbued with Jewish values. Our presence in Albany is a reminder to the legislators of their moral obligation to conduct their legislative duties with compassion and the purpose of healing the world.
Working in coalition with faith-based and broader community groups over the past year, we were victorious in moving the Senate and Assembly to pass the Raise the Age Act, which increases the age at which individuals can be tried as an adult from 16 to 18 years. Our efforts to pass two good government measures were triumphant in the Assembly, but fell short in the Senate. The first of these was New York Votes which reforms NYS election law to include early voting and allow for automatic, same day, and online registration. The second was a series of campaign finance laws which close the LLC loophole, impose stricter financial disclosure limits on donations, and implement public campaign finance options. With state elections occurring next November, these measures are sure to top our list as we again call upon our legislators in their districts and in Albany.
Recent events have highlighted a new strain of xenophobia, including anti-Semitism, that is permeating civil society. Now more than ever it’s imperative that RJV brings its message of tikkun olam to every state legislator. We ask you once again to find it in your hearts to help us increase our capacity to engage Reform Jewish congregations throughout the state, increase our programs and the time our Religious Action Center Legislative Assistant can spend more time preparing advocacy materials, educate our next generation of teens about effective tools of advocacy, and broaden our participation in the very many coalitions that change state government. Your generous financial support makes us able to do the work we do. Please donate to allow us to keep fighting for our Jewish values.
We wish you and those you love a sweet 5778 as together we pursue a vision of wholeness, justice, and compassion for New York State.
